BEHIND THE INDEX

Good tools leave a trail.

Inspired by Karpathy’s HackerTube, this index follows the AI tools, libraries, repositories, and products that keep coming up in Hacker News comments.

From comments to recommendations

We scan complete monthly files from open-index/hacker-news, parse links, and combine duplicate URLs. A tool counts at most once per comment. News, papers, social sites, generic blogs, and other non-tools are excluded.

A lightweight text heuristic boosts phrases such as “I use” and “highly recommend.” Mostly negative link contexts and obvious self-promotion are counted separately and excluded from ranking. Neutral, non-negative mentions count too: these are signals, not verified endorsements.

AI relevance, with a threshold

Well-known AI projects are curated. Other repositories need at least 40% of mentions in AI context; other domains need 60%. Generic infrastructure needs 85%. Distinct recommending authors in AI context are also required. Tools with an explicitly AI-related name can qualify directly. Every listed tool needs at least three recommending authors.

Consistency comes first

months active + ½ log₂(1 + authors)
+ 2 × share of strong recommendations

Each active month contributes one point. Independent authors add a smaller logarithmic boost. Explicit endorsements add up to two points. Repeated posts from one person cannot manufacture author diversity.

Read the evidence

Expand a card to read up to three short excerpts from different authors, selected for positive language and recency. Quotes link to the original HN comments. Descriptions are human-curated, public GitHub descriptions, or clearly labeled HN excerpts.

Counts, first/last dates, and activity charts refer to qualifying recommendations. Product sites and source repositories are merged using curated aliases and matching repository homepages. Each comment counts once per product; secondary links appear on its card. Product and company entries remain distinct. “Active in latest 12 months” is relative to the archive’s final date, not today. This is an archive of observed links, not a complete catalog or a measure of product quality.
